The Hmong people of Northern Laos used to whistle to communicate. This ethno- graphic short film follows the personal stories of three individuals from Long Lan vil- lage, as they reflect on their experience as practitioners of a vanishing musical tradi- tion. This short is an angry appeal to the world to take responsibility for the effects of capitalism, colonialism, and environmen- tal destruction in Africa. Songs that Flood the RiverDOK/documentary Germán Arango Rendón, Colombia 2021 · 72’ Originaltitel: Cantos que inundan el Río Sprache/language: Spanish Untertitel/subtitles: English Am Flussufer in Bellavista lernte eine junge Oneida, Alabados zu singen. Die traditionellen Begräbnisgesänge der Afrokolumbianer an der Pazifikküste dienten dazu, sich von den Toten zu verabschieden, wenn sie in das Reich der Seelen zurückkehrten. Als Oneida acht Jahre alt war, frass eine Schlange ihr Bein und liess sie verletzt im Dschungel zurück – eine Metapher für das, was kommen sollte: das Boyajá - Massaker. Mit Songs that Flood the River zeichnet Regisseur Germán Arango die Narben von Kolumbiens nach und hofft auf eine friedliche Zukunft. Along the riverbank in Bellavista, a young Oneida learned to sing alabados. The tra- ditional funeral chants sung by Afro - Colombians on the Pacific coast served to bid farewell to the dead as they returned to the realm of souls. When Oneida was eight years old, a snake devoured h er leg, leaving her injured in the jungle – a looming metaphor for what was to come: the Boyajá Massacre. With Songs that Flood the River, director Germán Arango marks the scars of Colombia’s misfortune, hoping for a peaceful future. |
